Cowal Highland Gathering is delighted to announce that bestselling author, broadcaster and social media sensation Coinneach MacLeod, widely known as The Hebridean Baker, has been appointed Honorary Chieftain for this year’s Gathering.

Born and raised on the Isle of Lewis, Coinneach has become one of Scotland’s most recognisable cultural ambassadors, sharing the stories, traditions, recipes and landscapes of the Highlands and Islands with audiences around the world. Through his award-winning books, television appearances and hugely popular online platforms, he has inspired countless people to connect with Scotland’s rich heritage and warm community spirit.

As Honorary Chieftain, Coinneach will play a prominent role in the celebrations at the Cowal Highland Gathering, from accepting the salute from the massed pipe bands, presenting trophies in the World Highland Dancing Championship and Cowal Pipe Band Championship to helping welcome competitors, visitors and guests from across Scotland and beyond.

Speaking about the appointment, Coinneach said:

“I’m, honoured to be named Chieftain of Cowal Gathering for 2026.  The Gathering is one of Scotland’s great celebrations of culture, music, dance and community.  I can’t wait to cheer on the highland dancers, pipers and athletes, and celebrate everything that makes the Cowal Gathering so special.”

For more than 130 years, Cowal Highland Gathering has brought together world-class Highland dancing, piping, athletics and cultural celebrations, attracting competitors and spectators from around the globe. Coinneach’s passion for Scottish traditions, storytelling and community makes him a fitting figurehead for this year’s event.

The Cowal Highland Gathering will take place in Dunoon on Thursday 27th – Saturday 29th August, with thousands expected to attend one of the world’s largest and most spectacular Highland gatherings.

Visitors can look forward to an unforgettable weekend of competition, entertainment, music, food and celebration as Scotland’s traditions take centre stage once again.
